Search engine optimisation has changed dramatically over the past few years. The tactics that worked in 2020 are not just outdated, they can actively harm your rankings. In 2026, technical SEO is more important than ever, but the focus has shifted to factors that genuinely improve user experience.

At LeadPath, we take a data-driven approach to technical SEO, focusing on the metrics and practices that actually move the needle. Here is what matters right now.

Core Web Vitals: Still the Foundation

Google’s Core Web Vitals remain central to search ranking. These three metrics measure real user experience:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how quickly the main content of a page loads. Your target should be under 2.5 seconds. Most businesses fail this because of unoptimised images, slow server response times, or render-blocking JavaScript.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced First Input Delay in 2024 and measures overall page responsiveness. Every interaction matters, not just the first one. Heavy JavaScript frameworks and third-party scripts are the usual culprits when INP scores suffer.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability. If elements jump around while a page loads, users get frustrated and Google takes notice. Setting explicit dimensions on images and videos, and avoiding dynamically injected content above the fold, solves most CLS issues.

Structured Data: Speaking Google’s Language

Structured data markup tells search engines exactly what your content is about. In 2026, this is not optional. Rich results, knowledge panels, and AI-generated search summaries all rely on properly implemented schema markup.

What to Implement

At minimum, every business website should have Organisation schema, LocalBusiness schema (if applicable), and Article schema on blog posts. Service pages benefit from Service schema, and product pages need Product schema with pricing and availability.

We regularly audit our clients’ structured data using Google’s Rich Results Test and our own automated reporting tools. Errors in schema markup can silently damage your search visibility without any obvious warning signs.

Mobile-First Is the Only First

Google has been indexing the mobile version of websites as the primary version for years now. Yet we still encounter businesses whose mobile experience is an afterthought. Tiny text, horizontal scrolling, buttons too small to tap, forms that are impossible to complete on a phone.

In 2026, if your site does not work flawlessly on mobile, you are invisible to a significant portion of your potential customers. Our web development service builds mobile-first by default, not as a retrofit.

Site Speed: Every Millisecond Counts

Page speed is both a ranking factor and a conversion factor. Research consistently shows that each additional second of load time increases bounce rates by roughly 20%. For an e-commerce site doing £100,000 per month, a one-second improvement in load time could translate to thousands in additional revenue.

Quick Wins That Make a Difference

Image optimisation is the single biggest opportunity for most sites. Serving modern formats like WebP and AVIF, implementing lazy loading, and using responsive image sizes can dramatically reduce page weight. Server-side caching, CDN implementation, and minimising third-party scripts round out the fundamentals.

Crawl Budget: Help Google Help You

Every website gets a limited crawl budget from Google. If your site wastes that budget on duplicate pages, broken links, or unnecessary redirects, your important pages may not get indexed promptly.

A clean site architecture, proper canonical tags, an up-to-date XML sitemap, and a well-configured robots.txt file ensure Google spends its crawl budget on the pages that matter. We use automated crawl analysis to identify and fix these issues before they impact rankings.

Automated SEO Reporting

Manual SEO audits are valuable but infrequent. Between audits, issues can develop unnoticed. We set up automated monitoring that tracks Core Web Vitals, crawl errors, indexing status, and ranking changes in real time. When something breaks, we know immediately, not weeks later.

What Most Businesses Get Wrong

The biggest mistake we see is treating SEO as a one-off project rather than an ongoing practice. Technical SEO requires continuous monitoring, regular updates, and adaptation to algorithm changes. A site that was perfectly optimised six months ago may have developed issues that are quietly eroding its search performance.

If your website’s technical health has not been assessed recently, or if you are not sure where you stand on Core Web Vitals, get in touch for a free technical audit. We will show you exactly what needs attention and how to fix it.

Good technical SEO is not glamorous. But it is the foundation that everything else builds on. Get it right, and every pound you spend on content and promotion works harder.
